Compass Box The Last Vatted Malt Bottled 2011
Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Compass Box 70cl / 53.7%
Released in 2011, Compass Box's Last Vatted Malt was created to mark the end of the term "vatted malt" following changes to Scotch whisky regulations, which required such whiskies to be labelled as blended malt Scotch whisky. As a farewell to the historic designation, Compass Box assembled this exceptional limited edition from just two remarkable parcels of single malt whisky.
The recipe combines a Aberlour 1974, matured in a first-fill sherry butt, with Caol Ila 1984 matured in American oak hogsheads. The marriage of these two contrasting whiskies creates a dram of extraordinary depth, balancing Aberlour's rich sherried fruit, spice and polished oak with the elegant coastal smoke, citrus and maritime character of mature Caol Ila.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 53.7%, without chill filtration and at natural colour, The Last Vatted Malt is a whisky of remarkable complexity and structure. Rich layers of dried fruits, dark chocolate, tobacco, spice and gentle peat smoke unfold across the palate before a long, warming finish.
Produced as a final tribute to a disappearing category of Scotch whisky, Compass Box The Last Vatted Malt remains one of the company's most historically significant and collectible releases.
