Cambus 1983-2011 | 27 Year Old Dead Whisky Society Single Cask 701513
Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Dead Whisky Society 70cl / 51.6%
A single cask Cambus single grain Scotch whisky, distilled on 16th September 1983 and bottled on 12th April 2011 by independent bottler Dead Whisky Society. Matured for 27 years and bottled at its natural cask strength of 51.6% ABV, this Lowland single grain whisky was drawn from cask #701513 as a limited release from one of Scotland's long-lost grain distilleries and independent bottlers.
Founded in 1806 on the banks of the River Devon near Alloa, Cambus grew to become one of Scotland's largest grain whisky distilleries. Following the whisky industry's oversupply crisis of the 1980s, the distillery closed in 1993 under United Distillers, bringing almost two centuries of production to an end. Although distillation ceased, the site continues to play an important role within Diageo's operations as a cooperage, cask-filling facility and warehousing complex.
The Dead Whisky Society specialised in bottling whiskies from closed and silent distilleries, preserving the character of lost names such as Cambus for enthusiasts and collectors. While the company is no longer active itself, its releases remain increasingly sought after for both their rarity and the distilleries they represent.
Cambus is one of those grain distilleries that has never quite received the recognition it deserves. Mature examples such as this often display a depth and complexity that can surprise even experienced whisky drinkers. Expect an elegant, old-school profile with layers of vanilla, honeyed cereals, soft orchard fruits, gentle oak spice and polished antique wood, demonstrating just how characterful well-aged grain whisky can become.
We've all judged a whisky by its label or colour at some point, but as this bottle proves, it's what's in the glass that really matters.
