Caledonian 1976-2011 | 34 Year Old Dead Whisky Society Single Cask 900015
Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Dead Whisky Society 70cl / 54%
A single cask Caledonian single grain Scotch whisky, distilled on 10th April 1976 and bottled on 29th March 2011 by the now-defunct independent bottler Dead Whisky Society. Matured for 34 years in single cask #900015, this Lowland grain whisky was bottled at its natural cask strength of 54% ABV, with each bottle individually numbered.
Founded in 1855 on the western outskirts of Edinburgh, Caledonian was once one of Scotland's largest grain whisky distilleries, supplying spirit for many of the country's best-known blended whiskies. Like several grain distilleries, it became a casualty of the whisky industry's overproduction during the 1980s and was closed by United Distillers in 1988. Today, bottlings from Caledonian are increasingly scarce, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the elegant, mature character of a long-lost Lowland distillery.
The Dead Whisky Society specialised exclusively in bottlings from closed Scotch whisky distilleries, releasing limited single casks that celebrated Scotland's lost whisky heritage. Although the company is no longer active, its bottlings have developed a loyal following among collectors thanks to their focus on rarity, natural presentation and exceptional mature whisky.
Single grain whisky has often lived in the shadow of single malt, yet well-aged examples such as this demonstrate just how rewarding the style can be. After more than three decades of maturation, expect a refined and complex whisky with layers of vanilla, honeyed cereals, soft oak, coconut, gentle spice and polished tropical fruit, carried by the smooth, silky texture for which mature grain whisky is so highly regarded. A superb opportunity to experience whisky from one of Scotland's most significant closed grain distilleries.
